Dear E-Friends,

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are heading into the holiday season with gratitude and joy! Colleen and I sure had a joyful journey to Italy, visiting with our daughter Emma, as well as a family visit on the Jersey shore, and are now refreshed, renewed and ready for a new adventure! Ready! Set!! WAIT!!! What? Wait??? Whether the Rolling Stones were singing directly to me or not..."You can't always get what you want" is bouncing around in my brain, and as much as I wanted to be playing jovial jazz with some jaunty gents and gals this Wednesday (29th) at the Sunset Lounge in the Elizabeth Hotel...well "sometimes you get what you need" and apparently I need to have a little more patience while we get everything just right, right!? Rome wasn't built in a day...we were Roman around there for XII + IV = "Speaks Latin, That Satin Doll"! The Sistine Chapel's budget was...through the roof!...and Venice got it's assets liquidated, to boot...if you know what I'm talking about!

SO - copious apologies (Apollo-Gs) for the wait! But please know that this will be worth waiting for!!! "My people" say we'll see you on the fifth floor of the Elizabeth for a little "jazz & cocktails" NEXT Wednesday, December 6th...

Well, I guess I have some more time off this week (!!) and in the meantime, you can hang with Colleen and me at Ace Gillett's this coming Sunday night, December 3rd (7-11 pm) - The first set is solo piano and then Colleen joins in around 8:30 with vocals throughout the night. Ace's is downstairs beneath the Armstrong Hotel, 239 S. College Ave. in Fort Collins. Bartender Cody keeps the classy cocktails coming, and the attentive wait staff bring delectable dishes to your table in short order. We hope you can join us for some subterranean, familial jazz.

Thanks for your patience!

(Special Edition)

Dear E-Friends,

Tonight's the night... and it's going to be way more than just alright (if you get the reference...)! The Frontera Project, featuring saxophonist Abel Mireles and double bassist Myles Sloniker, is gearing up for their house concert TONIGHT and we hope you'll join us for the experience! This is the first stop on their tour which, after 5 days of gigs and teaching clinics in CO, takes them south to Texas and Mexico. Mark Sloniker on piano and Kevin Matthews on drums round out the band. The concert starts at 7 pm (so we don't keep you out too late!) and will include 2 sets of mostly original compositions, with an intermission in between to share some light refreshments and converse with the band. You are welcome to bring a finger food/favorite beverage to share. A $20 'suggested' donation (always up to you!) will be accepted at the door for our touring musicians.

For more info on The Frontera Project read on:

Myles Sloniker is a bassist and composer based in New York City. Equally at home in a multitude of styles from straight-ahead jazz to classical, folk, and experimental music, Sloniker has established himself as a prominent young voice even among New York’s fractured musical cliques, and has performed with a long list of eclectic musical luminaries including Johnny O’Neal, Seamus Blake, Ron Miles, Jeff Coffin, David Hazeltine, and David Amram, among others. Born to a musical family in Colorado, much of his early life was spent backstage—at his mother’s folk groups’ rehearsals, hearing his father perform with the Fort Collins symphony or in jazz clubs—music was everywhere. Around the age of 11, Sloniker began to play the guitar and sing, but didn’t begin to pursue a career as a performer until his teenage years, when he was drawn to punk rock as a way to forge his own identity apart from his parents’ paths. As Sloniker’s musical tastes and ability continued to develop, he switched his focus to the upright bass and began seriously performing alongside his father in jazz clubs and at festivals. After a gap year spent on tour and in the studio, Sloniker enrolled at the University of Northern Colorado as a jazz bass performance major. Outside of school, Sloniker became an in-demand sideman and collaborator throughout Northern Colorado and at the age of 20, moved to New York City to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. There, his studies included private lessons with legendary bassist Ron Carter and composition lessons with Kirk Nurock. Aside from his work in jazz circles, Sloniker has also been involved in collaborations with theatre and dance, most notably at the New York International Fringe Festival and with artist and choreographer Nick Cave.

Born in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico and raised in Juarez, Abel Mireles is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of today’s most promising jazz artists. His pursuit of a career in jazz has taken him to the New York area where he recently earned a master's degree in jazz performance at William Paterson University, which gave him the opportunity to work with legendary pianist, Grammy award winner, and jazz program director Bill Charlap, as well as jazz greats Cecil Bridgewater, James Weidman, Armen Donelian, and Rich Perry. In the short period since his arrival in NYC, Abel has performed as both a bandleader and sideman in prominent venues such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Smalls, Smoke Jazz Club, City Winery, and B.B. King Blues Club & Grill. Since the 2012 release of his album Place Space Project on German label Konexx, Abel has had the opportunity to tour the American southwest., performing at venues such as The Outpost Performance Space in New Mexico and the 2013 and 2014 Festival de Jazz Chihuahua. He has also given clinics at universities such as Western New Mexico University and the University of Juarez.

Hope to see you tonight!,

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, 100% of every ticket sold supports the Food Bank’s hunger-relief programs. Musicians include Myles Sloniker/bass, Eva Bacmeister and Colleen Crosson/vocals, Chuck Landgraf/drums, and Mark Sloniker/piano. Go to http://www.tastebenefit.org/tickets for more information.

Slonjazz Newsletter

Dear E-Friends,

Woo-hoo! We have quite a week in store for you at Jay's Bistro in downtown Fort Collins, as well as a special event at DazzleJazz in Denver on Sunday evening. Myles Sloniker flew in from NYC on Monday night with friend, colleague, and internationally renowned Venezuelan trumpeter, vocalist, big band director, and composer, Linda Briceño, to do a series of events, concerts, and workshops in Fort Collins and Denver throughout the week. We are pleased and honored to have them both with us Wednesday through Saturday night at Jay's! During the daytime hours, they'll be meeting with students in several school districts, and on Saturday evening will present a workshop (performance/discussion) at the Music District in Fort Collins. The week culminates in a Sunday evening performance at DazzleJazz, a benefit for El Sistema Colorado, featuring Linda and Myles, along with Mark Sloniker on piano, Joe Anderies on saxes and flute, and others. All details below. We hope you can make it to one or more of these outstanding events!

Tonight, Wednesday, March 22nd (6-9 pm) - Myles Sloniker/bass, Linda Briceño/trumpet, and Mark Sloniker/piano jazz up Jay's Bistro (135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins, CO) for some mid week liveliness.

Thursday, March 23rd (6:30-10 pm) - Myles Sloniker/bass, Linda Briceño/trumpet, and Mark Sloniker/piano repeat the magic of Wednesday, but in a totally different way!

Friday, March 23rd (8-11 pm) - A powerhouse band at Jay's featuring Linda Briceño/trumpet, Myles Sloniker/bass, Joe Anderies/saxes and flute, Lance Croucher/drums, and Mark Sloniker/piano! If you can't make any other night, this is the one not to miss! Mark starts off with solo piano at 6 pm.

Saturday, March 25th (6-8 pm) Linda and Myles present a workshop at the Fort Collins Music District, 639 South College Avenue. The event is free and open to the public, but you will need a ticket. Click this link: http://www.themusicdistrict.org/workshop/myles-sloniker-linda-briceno-performance-discussion/?mdcd=2017-03-25

Saturday, March 25th (8-11 pm) - Jay's again features Myles Sloniker/bass, Linda Briceño/trumpet, and Mark Sloniker/piano in a trio setting. Solo piano with Mark at 6.

We expect Colleen Crosson and Emma Sloniker to make cameo appearances on vocals throughout the week at Jay's, though we can't predict specific times for that.... :-)

Sunday, March 26th (6 pm) - We will NOT be underground at Ace Gillett's this Sunday, but we'll be back again next Sunday! The band featured at Jay's on Friday night (above) will head to Denver to perform a benefit concert for El Sistema Colorado at DazzleJazz, 930 Lincoln St. Trumpeter, Linda Briceño was a founding member of the jazz component of El Sistema, Venezuela’s much-lauded national music education program. In the years since its founding, El Sistema’s model has been adopted by music education programs across the globe, Colorado included! Dazzle has a great listening environment - a perfect situation for this stellar group of musicians. Several El Sistema Colorado students will also join in the performance, sharing their musicianship and perspectives on the program. The show expects to sell out, so get your tickets and learn more about the concert here: http://dazzlejazz.ticketfly.com/event/1441002-linda-briceno-myles-sloniker-denver/

Dear E-Friends,

February is here and it's almost Groundhog Day!!
G-Hog Day happens to be my favorite (religious) holiday of the year (you know, all the shopping and gift-giving and Groundee Claus and caroling and flying hog-deer just sleigh me)! and I watched the movie (Groundhog Day) with friends on Monday night to get in the mood. I just love that song: "I'm Dreaming of a White Grounghog"! From the looks of it today, Phil will not be seeing his shadow tomorrow....nor in all probability, will I, although shadow-seeing and season-changing appear to have no direct correlation...what a hoax (a veritable HOG-HOAX)! The one true thing about Groundhog Day...and truth-be-told, the only thing that I really care about, is that G-Hog Day marks the exact middle of winter! And, I love winter, absolutely!!! Especially when it's half over!!! So, does that make me an optimist or a realist...and...the answer is NEITHER! It makes me a jazz pianist! So grab your shadow and cast your shadow, and your fate to the wind...AND SWING ON DOWN FOR SOME JAZZ!!!

Tonight, Wednesday, February 1st (6-9 pm) - Andrew Vogt/sax and clarinet and Mark Sloniker/piano jazz up Jay's Bistro (135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins, CO) .

Thursday, February 2nd, Groundhog Day! (6:30-10 pm) - Max Williams/bass and Mark Sloniker/piano host the music at Jay's tonight. We'll definitely be playing "The Shadow of Your Smile", in honor of Phil. Maybe even "Me and My Shadow"! Mark promises not to Hog all the solos...

Friday, February 3rd (8-11 pm) - Jay's features Luke Soasey/sax, Max Williams/bass, Chuck Landgraf/drums, and Mark Sloniker/piano. Mark starts off with solo piano at 6 pm.

Saturday, February 4th (8-11 pm) - Jay's features Jo Asker/bass, Chris Hewitt/drums, and Mark Sloniker/piano. Solo piano with Mark at 6.

Saturday, January 14th (8-11 pm) - Jay's features Jo Asker/bass, Chris Dale/drums, and Mark Sloniker/piano. Solo piano with Mark at 6.

Sunday, January 15th (7-11 pm) - We're underground at Ace Gillett's! The first set is usually solo piano and then Colleen and Emma join in around 8:30 with vocals throughout the night. Ace's is downstairs beneath the Armstrong Hotel, 239 S. College Ave. in Fort Collins. Bartender Ray keeps the classy cocktails coming, and the attentive wait staff bring delectable dishes to your table in short order. We hope you can join us for some subterranean, familial jazz!

Thanks for listenin',
Mark
